For the third year I plan to make a film short film and not really long before I have had trouble with keep it short as I've not been able to finish film in the past to the cut that I would like. Although I have even happy with them l. I'm hopin to not barricaded my creativity and ambition in film making but would like to make it feasible to finish a cut that I am comfortable with. I have many idea with doing from tex avery to Caroline leaf experimental would be nice and to do more hands on animations although I would like to do more of my specialism of 2D traditional and 2D animation which I feel will be the best to do is to stick with my specialism and not to wonder off and get to emerged in different animation roles. The idea I he are so far what I would like to do as a film an each idea will be pushed forward to line tests and the one that I feel will work best feasibility and as a film adding more experience in film making and as an animator improving my skills in 2D animation as character animation.
One idea I have is of a main stream style and narrative and going for a fantasy route because of the freedom of animation and with the impossible possible visually although if going for main stream on being able to do a scene or a short part of it due to freasablilty but even a short part may be to much depending on the character animation. Although the idea does seem over the top but getting all the pre production done with character design and narrative ready to do the scene early will Benfit.
The idea of the fantasy film is taking from 2D role playing games suchs as broken age and film such as avatar.
Broken ages
broken ages is a 2d animated role playing game. where the player has to point and click to where he wants the character to walk to and interact. i really like the style of broken age and would like to go with that kinda of style and idea of cut out animation it would nice to mimic cut out animation in 2d traditional sense with what i mainly enjoy from the clip above is the cloud land with all the birds and citizen of this town that in the sky. i think taking from the style ad taking ideas and situation with in the narrative that can push this fantasy idea further.
Child of Light
another isperation which my idea will be heavly based upon is the video games child of like the arts and visual the this game is truly beautiful the water colour background is something i wish to include in my own film. although with time it may not be feisable. the animation of the background in this game is 2d although the protagonist is CGI after playing the game and analysing the background animation. its seemed that the animation was done using the photoshop method we learnt in second year using a puppet tool the move the joints. when using this method in photo shop the image stretches slighty in which i notice this with the crows in the games.
the image above is a screen shot from the game in these mid-shot cut scenes it is animated more with after effect with cut out animation which could be a method i could use for my film although specializing in traditional I wish to stick to my original idea of traditional 2d animation. the water colour of the character look really great and as i have used water colour a lot i thought i could take from this to take the use of water further with more painted detailed background. although i was thinking wether to use boiling effect for the background which in traditional can look more subtle that in digital. but having to draw the frame five time with all the detail in will take a long time. Depending on the narrative and concept of the animation i may not have all the detail included in the background.
the colours and tones in the art of child of light is great for me to observe how to paint the tone in the animation for example the different tone in Aroras red hair. and Finns hat. the illustration of the protagonist will help the illustration of my character i like the style of her eyes and also Finns eye i feel that eye are the hard to capture correctly.
child of light music
from this video game i found the music to very inspirational and the perfect music to set the atmosphere and genre of the film. with the inspirational music i will take from it and explain to the musician about the track the atmosphere that i wish to portray.
child of light music
from this video game i found the music to very inspirational and the perfect music to set the atmosphere and genre of the film. with the inspirational music i will take from it and explain to the musician about the track the atmosphere that i wish to portray.
the first track of the sound track for Child of light is pilgrims on a long journey the soft piano melody i find is really moving for the film an find that it will capture the sweet innocent and charming emotion of the film. although the tone of the film does achieve this i feel that at time it can seem like its very sad which isn't what i would like to portray to the audience. the string make a nice contrast to the piano but fell that the strings take it down to a more sad approach the the song.
Aurora's theme
the song i feel has more of an up beat emotion to the song as the way starts with high amplitude and balances the instruments all together and then cymbals coming in to make it more up lifting. at first i felt that this song was sounding sad as well but it works as a neutral song but when listening to it i feel that it feel like a more determination song which will fit well with the the children determination on the journey they take exploring their home island. the surprise with the piano was cereal to the song.
Journey Sound Track
Concept Art
with the fantasy idea i did a pastel sketch of and elvish queen i really liked the sketch and felt that pastels will be really good to use for medium toward the animation.
elves
there is many adaptation and myths around elves
an elf is norse mythological race found in norse, icelanic swedish german, english scottish and most popular for being known for the mythological story living with santa clause. the myth of elves that i am portray are from the european mythology that is believed that they are a certain kind of demigod- like being in the pre Christian mythology and religion of norse and germanic peoples. these beings have ambivalent relations to humans, but have the power to heal them selves and to be immortal. the worship of elves persisted centuries after the germanic people formal conversation to Christianity. male elves are pictured to be youthful and the women are of great beauty. this race live in forests and other natural places, underground or in wells and springs.
another common portrayal of elves is from J R R Tolkiens series of books titled lord of the rings. the image above is the actress Liv Tyler who played the character Arwen in the lord of the rings films adaptation. the image above is the type of aesthetic look of elves that i was thinking to in this direction for the illustration and design towards the elves i will look in to more visual detail of this style and portrayal of elves in order find the right design.

brief story
the idea i have for the narrative is that two elvish children who live on an island inhabited with elves. there mind being curious explore the island. visiting the wood in which they have a running race and eat apples
then climb rocks in which a small accident happens in which the one character cuts her hand after the other character bandages it together one character notices a cave and ask to go inside the protagonist shakes her head in fear but then reassuring her self collects fire flies in the staff she has acquired and they continue into the cave.
while wondering in the cave one girl wonders off shot in which the protagonist pulls her back into shot and shakes her head indicating to stick together while they are in the cave. while the protagonist is looking toward the floor so that she can see where she is stepping she find a red glow. after bending down to pick it up, she releases that it is a stone a ruby stone. a strange noise accours and the two girl look up sharply. they see a bunch of eye open. in fear the protagonist runs away. the other girl draws her bow and arrow ready to fire. but then the protagonist comes in and throw her ammunition on the floor and pull her away to safety.
they both run only looking forward their goal to get home as fast as they can. eventually the protagonist and her friend bump into a young woman who the protagonist identifies her as her mother. the protagonist shows the ruby to her mother. her mother then shows the protagonist a box. the protagonist then places the ruby into the small wooden box in which it closes to reveal the protagonists name Luna the camera pulls out to reveal Luna at Middle age now the queen of the elvish people.
Luna Face Design Process

Luna's Nose designs
with the noses i want to keep to the generic button nose to represent the characters aesthetics to be more child like for example some of the drawings the elongated and with detail it looks more adult than in which i chose the circular shape.
Luna's mouth
with luna mouth it was the same as the nose in was to keep it simple and have the use of mark making as a smile and lips with out detail as it looks more adult. the mark making for drawings can be enough to use to indicate eyes noses and mouths. the small curves worked well although with the experimenting with dimples which i find it doesn't look geat and may not use it for the character.

Luna's final designs
with the final design i found worked well and portrayed the characteristicws of a child i wanted to stik with the simple drawing for the facial features and for the dress as an animator i will be drawing this character tens of times which i felt it would be more difficult to animate all the details with the use of the lips beeing a simple line works when seeing it all together and fits with the child aesthetic. the experimenting and the number of drawings help develop the aesthetic of the characters and with the time of developing the visual i was able to develop the personality of the character so i can understand how the character will sort out situtation and how she would act and move with in the scene i wish to animate.

Lunas Mums Design Process
i felt that i was had to design the character before drawing the story boards as before through out the vourse the characters have been design because of the characters drawn in the story boards. and that is the final design through out the film to finish the story board i had to design the protagonist mother who is at the end of the scene

Luna's Mum's Dress page 1
i started with drawing her dress i wanted to keep the dress to be close to Luna but wanted to use the colour white for her dress because of the semiotic use of white meaning to be more purity and religious for white and heaven portraying her mother to be god like with her being a mother and looking after her daughter. carried on with the experimenting technique with the dress her facial features and her face. with the dress I chose certain part such as the detail around Luna's mothers neck which is the same as Luna's dress and having the details at the bottom of the dress and at the bottom of the sleeves. the colours are white and gold. the detail with the drawing of the dress with the swirl going down the right arm and down the skirt in which will be gold.
Luna's Mums Dress Page 2
Luna's mums Eyes page 1
with the eyes i wanted her too look slightly like Luna as to portraying the relation to each other i still wanted to keep to the simplicity so that it makes it easier for me to be able to animate the character and make it more feasible to finish the scene. i experimented with having pupils only like with Luna but then decided to add in an iris to see it with would work for the character. i went with the opposite of before wtih simplicity and having more detail to make it look like an adult.
Luna's Mums Eyes page 2
i also experimented with the pupils wether to have it with black pupil or white like lunas and also experimenting with the size of the pupil. the eyes with the big pupils i felt didn't work and looked to mcreepy for a mother character the white pupils i thought will work to fit with the resebulance of Luna taking features from her mother. i experimented with the use of eye lashes which worked it some degree but not a lot as it looked more like the character had bags under their eyes instead of eye lashes.
Lunas mums Lips
for the lips same as the eyes i thought to have detailed lip to portray the age of the character as ive explained before a small line i fell works more for a child character and for an adult detail lip are more appealing towards an adult character. i experimented with have a dip in the upper lip and in the bottom lip together and alternating it with having either one or the other. i then prefured to have only the dip in the top lip as it gives of a more less threatening and more friendly smile.and fit with the character of a mother. i did one drawing to see what the mouth will look open which was fine the only thing would be to drawn it semtrical so that it does look side ways.
Luna's Mum
i then experimented with the eyes noses and lips together and include the dress in which i also found to draw the crown for the chractaer different to Luna's to portraty that she is the mother and the queen and portraying that the Luna becomes queen mid through the film. the two on the right are the better one as they portay a more friendlier appeal.
Luna Mum page 2
the second page there was problems with different proportions for her face in which it was not happy with these designs. the narrower face is some i prefer with the character as it keeps the character looking younger which works with elvish women looking beautiful. there was problem with placement of her eyes and facial features. i experimented to have her hair over her ears or behind her ears. the rounded face works for the end but i am unsure with the design and may have to experiment more with it.
Luna's mothers designs page 3
i experiment with having a wider face which i found worked slightly i also experimented with having white pupils the white pupils work well and the eye lashes on the design at the end have short line than the centreal design which i feel helps with the design. as the longer lashes look too much and takes away from the characters characteristics. the centreal design the fore head seems to be to big for the character i feel that small and narrow would work better for the beauty of the character.
Luna mother designs page 4
i carried of designing to tray and get the head shape right in which the drawings ended becoming worst that the pages before the narrow head worked better but the drawings was awful. the first small design with the dress the proportions a really off and i think i might revert back to the original designs and use them.
Luna's mother design 5
i tryed i finally attempt for the mother and found that the designs weren't working and to revert to the other designs i feel that this page has a problem. these design make the character look too young for a mother because of the problems i will be choosing the original desings from the first page.
concept art 2 woodland scene
with characters design i decided to do some concept art and drawings to portray the narrative of each scene the drawing below is the first scene where the girls are in the woods and and have there running race with the character Paige in the tree to show are enthusiasm and athleticism with climbing in the tree. having the character smiling to symbolise the joke from the film of Paige throwing an apple on Luna's head and Luna looking upset because of the event. the aesethics will be more pastels than water colour which the water colour looks fantastic but i want to experiment with pastels as it will look great animated with the effects of boiling will have a brilliant effect.
concept art 3
the rock scene i drew with the thought of the two sitting having a pleasant conversation and enjoying the view as friends do. the rock they are sitting on is from a rock found in peak district after doing visual research i wanted to portray more of the scenery from the film such as the woodlands below them and the lake side which is an idea for a scene
concept art 4 Lake scene
another idea for a scene i had was a lake scene in which the two children find a lake in which Luna find a small sea creature. with the framing i thought to stick with the rule of thirds having Luna interacting with the creature to be more important than Paige wandering off into the distance to fit with Paige's short attention span to fit her personality. also having the sea creature framed on the bottom right cross to show the importance and difference of the new world that the audience are being introduced two.
Time Line
i did a rough time line of the scene i am doing for the film. marking out each sequnce of each scene labled as shown below
Beat Board
i then decided to take the time line and make a clean up visual this came out brillianty and portrays an easy visual kbnowlage of the narrative. with this i took the most important visual for the narrative taken from the story boards and aid the time line.

Elves Pastel Aesthetic test
the image below explain how the animation will be animated with an example at the end. the way i plan to animate this is having the shot composed from layer like the way cel animation is composited. the aesthetic to be in total pastel use as shown with the first concept art.
the layering works with have the background lay as shown above
luna pastels aesthetic layers
the video above portrays the layer full animated to portray how the animation works i feel that this worked well although i should of slow the footage down so that the audience can see and take in the visual of what going on and takes it in.
Luna shaking head 12fps
i then put the frame together after cutting out all the unessaery background in the other layers of Luna's head hair and body. the 12fps look better than the 24fps be low i plan to animate at 12fps or 24fps on twos. the timing of this is a lot more realistic with her shaking her head alough the drawings did not portray the action correctly so i think to re animatie this will be the best desiction and see if it improves. the aesthetic of using pastel i really like and look how i would for the film. the boiling effect using pastel has a beautiful aesthetic and works for the film. although when cutting the protagonist Luna's head hair and body i found was very difficult as because there is now line work to the drawing it wasn't possible to cut a define line around the character and ending up cutting out bit of the head in which changes the shape and effects the animation. the non line work of the drawing looks really different and beautiful than the generic line block drawings although it going to take me longer in the post production with the compositing. in which i will have to use line work for the film unfortunatly as i thought the aesthetic looked beautiful
Luna shaking head 24fps
Fantasy idea 2
story
the narrative of this idea is that it is a boat battle scene for a bigger film the scene is the last but one scene before the end of the film. the story of this is that pirates have attacked the home island of the elves and in the process killed many of the queens (blond characater) people, because of this a big pirates ship is built in order to go into battle and stop the pirates from ever terrorising her land and people. the story takes place in the sea with the pirates being the first to fire their cannons the elves not having any are weak and their ship gets wrecked and people get wounded. in the struggle the queen looks to heavens for help in the ships mast is her companion, friend and protector paige an elvish archer. the queen giving her the signal the archer draw to fire at the captain of the opposing ship. unfortunately the mast of the ship is hit and the archer is sent falling on her journey to the ground she re aims and fires blinding towards the direction of the captain, and lands in a heap.

spirits of the forest
spirits of the forest is an idea of a creepy eery film not the full genre of horror but more erry and creepy with this film i would like to have more tension than dramatic jumps to scare the audience for me i feel that having these jumps will give the audience time to relax which i feel is nessearcary but i feel it would be worst for the audience to feel the constant tension of the something going to happen but never does keeping them on their toes i feel that this will work well but an cause the audience not to enjoy the film but also can make the feel look boring an not create the atmosphere i am looking making it that it not creepy and boring and over all making the film awful. i am not a huge horror enthusiast but i feel as a director it would be nice to have a go and experiment and experience creating a film with a different genre. this give me more freedom as a director to be able to make films that i visualize more and give me more freedom towards what i want to make as a film.
the idea came from when i was watching creepy things in video game and two really stood out. the two games where super mario galaxy 2 and luigis mansion. in super mario galaxy 2 on one part of the game if if you look up you can see 3 figures staring down at the protagonist of the game (mario) no matter where you are in that level if you look up the 3 mysterious creatures are still looking at you. player have been told that it may have been for a test level of the pre production stage of making the game and left it there in final production. some player have thought for them to be Kadomas which are Japanese tree spirits these spirits live in the woods and forests of japan. the spirits simply live there they are not visable by the living and they live in the trees of the forests and woods. they are not harmful but the folklore is that if you cut down a tree that houses a Kadoma then the person who cut the tree down will have bad luck or also know as 'cursed' it like the legend of king tuts tomb where the one who visits will have the same effect. the some of the population of japan also worship these spirits and create small shrines for them to keep the spirits happy and thank them for the tree and for looking after the nature in the forest. the way that the folklore is told i feel it is very mix from bad thing happen to people worshiping them which i felt was not the right atmosphere for the film when researching about Kadomas i found more Japanese spirits and when as researched about them.
below are the sites i used to research about kodamas
https://hyakumonogatari.com/2012/08/05/kodama-the-tree-spirit/
the link below for the reasearch into kodamas is where i found a new spirit that interested me

Yurei
yueri spirits are a japanese sprit tend to take mainly the female form this spirit interested me becuase of the form of purgatory which is the inbetween stage of a person dying and finally getting through to the after life perfectly fine.
yureis are female spirit that only are in purgatory state these spirits only form when the person has been murdered or commited suicide. these spirits mainly keep the emotion of revenge love and jealousy. the most common show of this in a film is the horror film the grudge. a folklore told is that a woman before passing away asked her husband that if she died that the husband must never marry which the husband promised that he would not remarry. after the death of the woman the husband remarry brining the form of the yurei on the woman the woman got jealous and wanted revenge and ended up cutting off the head of her husband.
i looked in to research by looking a video about them i used this method alot for reaearch besides reading because i feel i understan the information being giving to be verbal and visual.
Yurei Visual Research
tibetan book of the dead.
i did visual research after researching about the yurei
the video help me understand more about this spirit and weather i could use it as one of the wondering spirits of the forest.
when looking upon research of spirit one that caught my eye was the Jikininki which are terrifying look creatures that feed on human flesh. which is something not nice at all and i found will fit with the film and let me explore more into the narrative. jikininki are human like gouls that wonder around looking for human flesh to feed on jikininki can also morph into a form of a human which can make the spirits invisible and hard to tell which is human and which is a spirit which i thought could work towards a narrative. the jinkinki's appearce are thin and skeleton like with long sharp claw and head that are almost form to be a wolf. the part of the jikininki is that hey have big glowing eyes. the apperance of these spirit i though i could use in the background of that shot using the rule of thirds for the audience to identify the creature watching the protagonist. below is a video about these spirit by the same group that produced the information about the yurei.
i did research of the tibetan book of the dead. when looking at the luigis mansion one of the hcaracter could see 49 days into the future wich becuase the character is a ghost it is meant to symoblise the tibetans book of the dead where tibetan monks beleive that when aperson dies they get reincarnated to journey through to the reincarnation
Spirits Concept art
i decided to start doing some design work for the film the concept art was mainly to capture the antagonist the yurei. the drawing below capture the feel of the this ghostly character just there in shot. i will be digitalize this as i would like this film to be a digital film using toon boom the only worry beside capturing the genre to the audience is capturing the right lighting for the film and using the colouring correctly to capture the lighting. lighting is the lowest amount of knowlege of cinematography i know and would like to extend my knowlaege in the extended module with doing the colour and lighting for the final idea i choose. the reason fro choosing a horror film is that it would be very challenging for me as a director and i think the practice in the horror genre will be beneficial as a film maker.
Spirits Synopsis
middle age woodcutter begins his daily work in the forest of japan after waking from a fall things don't seem to be the same.
'the story of this idea 'Spirits' is about a middle age woodcutter named jack who going doing his job in a forest in japan. after falling from a great Height he wakes and continues his job although this time its different spirits start stalking him.'
i would like to have some of the spirits to be around in the background that only the audience notice. and then having the only antagonist to be in shot. when the yurei is in shot i thought to keep the camera static in order to create tension.

Plaster animation test
after the presentation of this week on 05/10/16 I had a problem with the narrative with the character being elves and had I confusion with the problem and ask for more input on the idea and narrative for the film the feedback was that i was asked 'why is them being elves important to the narrative' in which I realized it wasn't i was explained about having to show visually to the audience why the character were elves for example in the film star wars the reason they gorge Lucas give to the audience for t to be set in space and have all the fantasy sci-fi is the sentence at the beginning of the film ' a long time ago in a galaxy far far away' just this sentence alone tells the audience that the film that its set a long time ago which mean the knowlage and context is something of the past and that it will have to be historically correct. although with the text of in a galaxy far far away explaining that its not near our planet and doesn't have to historically correct because it not near our solar system which works with the adaptation that its in space.
taking from this I thought for my narrative the reason for them to be elves is because the planet they live on is in a different solar system on an alternate universe. which i will portray this with in text and imagery of the planet and zooming in image by image to portray this. in one image have a generic old map portraying the line of text stating 'land of elves', to then the finalimage of the zoom will be a shot of the elvish children in the woods.
alternate planet.
an alternate planet or alternate universe is when a universe like our own gets changed dramatically compared to our own universe and planet earth. for my idea towards this it includes a different universe istead of an alternate.
the idea of an alternate universe or alternate planet meant that i will have to design the planet that inhabits the elves the majority of visual referencing came from our own planet earth as seen above i feel that analyzing the planet and finding out with physic of the placement of our sun and with hotter parts of earth and colder parts of the earth deciding if i would like to include them into my own planet that houses the elven race. from analyzing i felt that i would like to have the same heat that causes deserts and the cold that cause sheet of think layered ice and from the neutral climate which is the more greener and nature part with this i need first a country or land in order to first accomplish this.
i knew about Pangea which is how earth look roughly 300 million years before the earth quakes and rock formation breaking apart. really like the idea of having one huge continent for the elven planet and having the content split into different countries with in which each will have an extreme climate condition.
I looked at fantasy video game called world of war craft and they have the same concept but having three different planet with a number of different races. i really like the difference in contrasts in the different planet the planet on the right (Azeroth) I find the two bigger continents I can use in my own planet because I feel that having two continents and split between water represents a conflict between them when seeing this which is something that I would like to use and i can use the same representation giving a suggestion to the audience that there could be conflict involved suggesting hidden narrative within the film.
the other two planets Draenor and Outland have the one continent which influenced the idea to have one continent for the elven planet. The planet Outland is very close together and cluttered which what i live keeping the civilization close suggesting to me that they all get along in peace and live their lives peacefully. the aim of the continent with the elves is that they live peacefully together, have a confined continent I feel will fit close to the narrative of how they live in a subtle way. Draenor have a more branched out approach to the continent to me it almost looks like a maple leaf or an Oak leaf which I think is great idea to use this as a semiotics to include in the film having the elven continent shaped like something from the narrative like the ruby or the opening of the cave in the narrative.
Designing the Planet.
the first design I have generally just experimented with the continent will all ideas I have which i have experimented with through out the design process even suggesting compass barings of north south east and west. Which I elaborated on more in the future designs. the bottom left designing i base on scar that i have on my wrist which to me at a distant looks like Italy but when examining closer I drew all the detail of the out line as a continent for the planet and to me it looks like the shape of a koi fish. koi fish means ambition. the bottom right is experimenting with the two continents to suggest the war esc to the film. with the top three I added a colder continent like with Antarctica on planet earth. suggesting the climate of the planet having the cold part of the planet. I even experimented with the axis in which the planet is on also taking reference from our own planet earth and thinking more towards physic but felt that if i do elaborate to the extent of including the physics, I think it would be better to have the planet and the continent finished.
second page of the Planet designs
I decided to experiment more with splitting the continents out around the planet as shown in the image above of the top two designs. the one on the left was taken form an old design and experimenting and seeing hat it would look like if it was split. I also changed the top two to have the cold Arctic continent to not be on the edge like it is represented on our planet. i found that the splitting of the continent was great and could determing more small settlement but i felt that having on big continent will look different and less similar to earth. the idea now is that i want to go something completely different than our own planet earth, because the audience will see that its a different planet but with the use of references from our own planet has a small indication of being similar but also entirely different. keeping the audience feeling slightly relatable to the planet.
third page of the planet design
this I experiment more with the three continents changing each slightly long the way. with the planet design on the top right i tried to use the semiotics of the shape of the planet the two continents with the idea of ying and yang. and with the idea of the two suggesting war it can portray a more ironic approach with ying and yang i feel the meaning of one with out the other. with peace and war you can't have one with out the other you can't have peace if war hasn't interfered. i then with the top left planet decided to add in a small planet to see if it would make a dramatic difference which i feel did make a difference in which the result i don't feel works and is necessary for the film or narrative. looking at the arctic type continent i fell that i would rather have the arctic looking like the one on our own earth to keep a sense of relation towards the audience understanding the planet being similar.
Fourth page of the planet design.
I explored more with the shape of the continent stick to three continents and the two still symbolising war or other beings although with the narrative there is no other species on the planet other than elves. like the top right planet which i am sticking with the peace and war theme going on with that design although I experimenting with the shapes of two of them as you can see. the top left and bottom right planet i experimented the shape and had it so that the middle of the two planets being close with the coast of certain parts of the continent. creating a more friendlier approach with the two continents which is something i am willing to have as an approach having the whole planet being friendly and peaceful which i feel doesn't help the narrative as there is no conflict and no dramatic sense to the narrative causing less entertainment towards the audience which i feel isn't great.
the idea of this design is to portray as much of the narrative and the setting with out a large amount of detail. the bottom left idea i went for the single continent which i feel very strongly about with the planet and the layering of the planet as there is not conflict and feel that it could become too open with the fantasy realm which i find is great and the idea of this film is to expand it in the future although to much freedom can cause a film to go out of control and with that the narrative is gone forcing the narrative to be boring unfulfilling narrative of 'I woke up and it was all a dream' which i have been told is the worst way of ending a narrative.

synopsis
2d animated short about an alternate planet in habited with evles two crious Evlish children adventure around their own home country. until a starling noise interrupts them,
forcing hten to run home to saftey, sticking the smeiotics and meaning on mermories, childhood and the out side world in the mind of a child.
treatment
camera
the camera is static through out, becuase keeping the shot simple will keep the audience engaged with the film, having static shot of close ups and medium shot
these shots will also portray the characters emotion which is very important as there is no dialouge with in the film, with body language being key,
long shot included with it will keep the natureal slow pace i wish for the film complexs shots will be included when nessasary for tracking shot for run and walk cycles,
this will trastion the narrative further, keeping the audience understaing of the narrative, this will also create more tention for more dramatic quick pace
sitcuation with in the film. The shots high and low angle willl be used to portray the relationships and dominace of two characters with the used of varuious P.O.VS
for example with two characters a high angle P.O.V will portray that this character will be symbolised to be more dominante making character 2 look small and timid.
the opposite can be used with a low angle a P.O.V of character two is low then it will symbolise the wekaness of this character
making character 1 morde dominanted because of the character 1 towering over the camera shot.
asthetic
the asthetics is simple and limits detail in the designs of the character the eviroment will be various bright colours, with the use of pastal medium of the film.
this will create a beautiful illustrated story giving a soft innocent feel towards the film
this will keeping to the childhood memories becuase of the astethic looking hazy as are memoires, this will represnt more of a childs drawings of characters and pictures. the line work will only show on the facial
feature with eyes noses and mouths as i feel keeping line work in contrstics the colour with out it this will give in more freedom to it
representing a child drawing with how a child will have to stay with in the lines.
sound
the sound for the film will be mainly diegetic sounds and non diegetic being music. the music will be strong with flute, strings and piano being soft and having
a nuatreal state and a more tenstionbuilding and dramatic fast pace during the end to portray more atmospheric emotion towards the film with the used of the music the tempo picking up will cuase the atmosphere to create more tenstion and drama to the scene
having a mix of the flute stirngs and piano then creating one to be more dominat will create different atmopheric emotion to the film.
the music it will only appear where needed as i would not like to put music it for no reason, understanding the narrative and emotion i would like to portay to the
audience will help determing the istruments and the emotion being portrayed. There is no dialouge meaning no voice acting
although diegetic sound of laughter and gasping in needed situations. atmospheric sound will be used when nessesary for emotion and more natueral sounds and organic sounds for atmosphere and enviroment.
techniqal
the animation will be 2d traditional animation with the medium of colour and ink being pastal as mentioned before there will be no inking as there will be no
outline to the chracters besides the face detail of eyes nose and mouths. when traditonally drawn the chracter will be on a seprate layer to the background in which the background of the tradtional character animation will be cut]
out in photoshop and all the layer needed to make the shot will be put together in after effects. then edited in premier to put in the sound with the animation.

Peter pan in Kensington gardens
I had the idea to adapt Peter Pan in Kensington gardens which is a book written by Sir J M Barrie who wrote the play peter pan: the boy would wouldn't grow up released in 1904 also titled peter pan and Wendy which was written into a novel in 1911. peter pan in Kensington gardens was a small narrative with in a play titled the little white bird released in 1902 the little white bird is a episodic play including a number of different narrative in one play. peter pan in Kensington gardens was written as a novel in 1906 taking the chapters and section of the little white bird and adapting it as a children's novel.

once there Sir JM Barrie could be rid of from the family and invite himself round for tea.the story's of fantasy and fairies grew more and had Peter Llewelyn Davies as the inspiration for the characters name. the first use of he Llewlyn Davies boys used in his work was the book the boy castaways of black lake island being a record of of the terrible adventures of the brothers Davies in the summer of 1901. he gave a copy of this book to Arthur Llewelyn Davies who left it on the train. which followed his second novel including the Lewelyn Davies children was the Little White bird in which was the first appearance of peter pans to the world.

Peter Pan Drawing experimental and Initial Design
with the aesthetic i wanted to create an illustrated sketch look as if the character peter pan was sketching his life or The auther drawing out the story himself. I use ink as a roller point pen and fine liner pen to create the sketching and use pastel for the coudly atmosphere for the houses below which added a nice effect the lights for the houses were also to be pastel but this causes a problem when scanning in the drawing as the residue of the pastel can end up breaking the scanner unlless i risk this with my own scanner using the universities scanner is not an option. the fill for the line work i wanted to loosly fill and not full colour block the shapes as I felt it would create a lovely aesthetic effect and create a great boiling effect
peter pan one week old face designs
i then did some design on peters face as i thought experimenting more with different design will help me define the characters face i really like the details drawing on the bottom left with the character looking sad the detail works well and portrays the emotion well and the details fit the same visuals of a baby. although as much as i love this design and wish to use the detail will be very difficult too draw repetitively with the animation. the idea of having the for head big worked as babies do generally have big forehead so that a convention that will have to go with for the character. although as the centre right drawing the huge forehead doesn't look very appealing for the character. the design on the bottom right next to the signature i think will work the best with the animation althogh i feel that experimenting with head shapes will help define the look of the character. i feel going straight into the facial design doesn't work and its best to take time and draw a number of eyes noses and mouths to find the right kind for the character.
.
Peter pan head shapes.
i decided to drawn the head shapes for the chracter and realised that when the character faces towards the camera that the fore head and jaw line would work better if the were both semetrical. with a side view of the character i experimented with having a kidney bean shaped head which i found worked well and keeps to a simple design to help the animation be feasible,
Peter Pan Eyes designs
the eyes i felt need to be experimented on to find the right eyes for the character i thought about the same idea with the elves have little black pupils in different shapes. although i felt it looked more like a skulls eye socket which look to creepy and didn't fit with the soft narrative that the book imply and felt he need more younger. the same problem with the illustration look unnatureal with with the character havie line work only for the eyes with no fill which make the character look soul less. throught the designs i feel that having the slight indication of the eye lids.
peter pan night gown
for the body i did designs of `peters night gown which he only wears at the beginning and takes it off when relies that belive peters a bird and solomon explains that if peter calls himself a bird then way does he wear human cloths solomon then explains that non of the other birds are wearing human cloths in which then peter then takes his night gown off. with the designs of the night gown i experimented on the neck cuffs of the night going ranging from non to frilly to small line across the neck and a collar for me i chose the collars as it the feasibility of the animation and being able to finish the film and animate it eserly. with this i felt that having no sleeve cuffs will be best to suit for the limit of detail but i may continue with experimenting with the characters in animation.
Kensington gardens map
after reading the book i felt that having a map of the gardens will help with identifying where peter is in the gardens. the first chapter of the book is the author J M Barrie explaining what the gardens look like which has the uses of his own personal names for certain areras for example the in the map above which is peters map and keeps to the victorian vocabulary and the map below is a modern map of the gardens
after the problems of creating a narrative for the elf idea and struggerling for a theme. with the problems with the idea of the film with the resposibility theme didn't have a powerful dramatic conflict with the narrative in which i have negotiated to do peter pan in kensington gardens idea and making for my film for my degree show. with having peter pan in kensington gardens as the film this years i was able to concentrate on peter pan and progress into pushing the film further.
Visual experimentation
i design to create drawing to get the visual of the film on paper rather than in my head with this i experimented with line work having the drawing ni mono crome and some in colour and experimenting with the figure of a character.
with the first drawin above this is the main visuals for the film keeping to the sketch look i have shown before this is the line work and with the film the tree will be colours with the same sketch colouring as peters hair. the small circle is the fairy that peter is talking to. i prefure to have small circular orbs to represent the fairy the same as in steven speilburgs film Hook with tinker bell played by julia roberts way they use a white orb and then on close up portray an humanoid creature.
the humanoid fairies designs.
i wanted to stray away from the generic illustration of beautiful young ful creature in which i felt with how the author explains them to be , mischievous and loathing human and playing tricks on children and eat out of their food bowl inappropriately. in which with this i decided to fit with this explanation have have them looking freaky and unnerving. in which i thought about the tooth fairy from the film hell boy
the image above is the full render of the tooth fairy from hell boy having a creepy unpleasant although to four legs is something i feel i would not like to have with the fairy characters the eyes i really like having the dark black soul less eyes in which help with having a more creepy effect and creates a new appeal towards fairies. the wings on the tooth fairy have a great leaf texture in which i think would be great to use as in the disney peter pan tinker bells dress is a leaf and have it as their wing is something different with this in mind with tinker bell to have the leaf wing wrap around the fairies when there not flying.
cornish pixies harry potter and the chamber of secrets.
Fairy line drawing
i drew a line drawing of the faires when then camera is more close up and having them having traits as human like in the disney animated and with alot of film adaptation of peter pan and wendy.

Peter pan story boards
below are the story boards for peter pan in Kensington garden it took a while to finish this and when seeing the 72 page i was very worried about creating the section i want to make. although i was happy that i went forward with out limiting myself to a certain amount of panels like i did in the summer and this is the full storyboard to what i would like peter pan in gardens to look like as an animated film. the reason for to be animated is the fact that peter i a baby a live action baby wont be bale to talk as fluently as peter in the film and cgi birds fairy and a baby will look awful with the VFX of today. i feel that it fit really well with animation and the style fits with targeting towards children and adults.
the section I am making
Finding Neverland
I watched the film finding Neverland to find out more about JM Barries life and his relationship with the Llwelyn Davies family. In this scene below the character Peter Llewelyn davies who destroyed the set for his play after getting upset and worried about his mothers illness. with this scene the anger, frustration and emotion of the characters from finding Neverland connotes the emotion of anger of the character Peter Pan in Peter Pan and Wendy and the anger towards grown up's he has through out the narrative of the novel. with this semiotic I thought to have this towards Peter emotion with in my film, when he returns to Kensington gardens after the his mother abandoning him. Talks to solomon the wise old crow about what happened first lying but after trusting solomon tells the truth. with the voice acting to portray this I want the actor to be blunt and full of rage as if snapping at solomon.

Animatic rough
The rough animatic for peter was really bad it was unfinished and i wasn't able to portray the whole section that i was adaption from Peter pan In kensington Gardens. i like the digital aspects of this and it was an okay cut but could of been better i will improve on this and create another cut and continue to keep working on the animatic until i am happy with it
Peter script
I wrote the script for the section of the film which i really enjoyed putting together and writing it and having written the information on the section i am doing.
the section i am doing is when peter gets rewarded with two wishes in which his first wish is to go back to his mother but to come back in case he found her disappointing. he gets the wish and the queen fairy grants him the power to fly in which he fly back to his mother. the window is open and his mother is a sleep. and is very upset because of peter departure feeling guilty peter plays on his pan pipes until she is happy again. desperate to ride his boat and tell the birds of the adventure in which he fly back promising his mother that he shall return. after several months pass and the queen fairy grants him his second wish to live with his mother permanently he fly's back to his mother where the window is shut and barred he finds his mother a sleep in her bed with another young boy. feeling very distraught he fly's home sobbing and bumps into solomon the wise old crow in which after arguing and peter telling his guardian what happened

Animatic version one first cut
i was able to finish a first cut of the film. i sent it to the musician and he really liked and said that the music fitted well with the ascetics and the narrative. i really like this cut i missed some shot out that need to be included to portray more of the book on screen. this cut had the adaptation visually of the book from this i can now dig deeper into semiotics and signs and research about the author and create semiotics with in the film. i will continue with another cut with voice acting and music from the musician elliot. the music i felt to worked really well i had feedback to make the opening more upbeat and lively which i will create a second version of this cut with the up beat opening of the fairy's ball.
History of JM Barrie
after getting the narrative of the novel on screen i really wanted to dig as deep as i could into Sir JM Barries life and his relationship with the Llwelyn Davis boys.I have mentioned about the Film Finding Neverland I started looking at online video of information of Sir JM Barrie.
This video above was the same basic information that i already knew and all the video contained the same information expelling that JM met the Llwelyn Davis boys in Kensington gardens and going to dinner with the family and telling story's to the boy and that these Boys were the inspiration to the story's of Peter Pan Novels.
the information given in this short history on Sir JM barrie it said a lot about the Llewlyn Davies boys i wanted to have a look at other information to have more that one opinion on his life and his history of Sir JM Barrie. the video below is the same with information basic information of Sir JM Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies boys the information has help a lot with coming up semiotic there one this that i could understand about the narrative with peter pan in Kensington garden. that was where is the child abandonment involved in his life. the Llewelyn Davies children parents Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Mother) and Arthur Llewelyn Davies (Father) . they both passed away Arthur in 1906 which was when Peter pan in Kensington Garden was published and not long after sylvia passed on. this was nearly 10 years after Sir JM Barrie wrote the little white bird.i found about the obsession SirJM Barrie had with the children and realized that the book if you wanted to think of it towards his life. the child abandonment is actually, the children abandoning Sir JM Barrie. Sir JM Barrie loved those boys and was also considered to my be a pedophile but in the victorian era it was really a thing. i think the abandonment being about the Llewelyn Davies boys is a great semiotic and took me a while to figure it out and dug deep to find out.i am unsure if this is the case as it best not to think about peter pan being close to Barrie's life as the books was an escapism for Sir JM Barrie not a citation of his life which is something i feel is good to keep in mind and not concentrate on it being relevant to Barrie's life.
The Tragic Death of Peter Pan
another semiotic i found may be part of the story was life and death although with Barrie's life the only information i have is his brothers accident. David Barrie (Sir JM Barrie's brother) fell and slip in and his his head on ice when ice skating and died at the age of 14. it could be that but when i dug about this life and the Llwelyn boys. i found a tragic tale. Peter Llwelyn Daives didn't like Barrie interfering into the family life uninvited and favrouting his brother George. barrie even took Peter off of his will at last minute before he died. peters mother and father passed as i've mention before. his older brother George died in battle in world war one. Micheal Llewelyn Davies Committed suicide in 1921 with all this happening in peter Llewelyn Davies's life. on top of all of this he was being called peter pan because that where the name inspired from Peter Llewelyn Davies's named. Peter hated being called this eventually with the tragedy happening Peter Llewlyn Davies committed Suicide in 1960's jumping in front of a underground train. i feel that this event of Peter Llewelyn Davies can work towards semiotics towards the life and death feeling with in the book, and may add it in the film as a peter pan apologizing to Peter Llewelyn.
animatic second cut
animatic third cut
this is the final cut i was told from showing the second cut to added in more to the flying scene in which i did i really liked the flying scene and it changed the pace of film and kept the audience engaged in the film. i had feedback from a peer and they told me they really liked the fly scene and i felt that it was worth adding into the animatic as i was originally going to just keep it in mind when producing the film and the animation process.
Linking Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens with Peter Pan Film's
with this i wanted to keep the visual close with the disney animated film and the live action film. the reason for this is because the audience watching would have more likely have only seen the film. the film don't explain what happens to peter being abandoned by his mother like they do in the book. for example with the image below
the film i'm doing portrays where the pan pipes came from so it can create the audience to understand this. this shot i roughly is in the animatic with the close up of peter playing the pan pipes. another example is with this is peter mother
the shots above is my film and the live action peter pan film from 2003. this was to portray the thought and enigma code of peter mistaking Wendy for peters mother as he was a baby when he left and was abandoned. he may have forgotten what his mother looks like children will remember distinctive features towards people. the long brown hair of his mother. Wendy's hair is also long and brown so he could of mistaken Wendy to be his mother. i also wanted to portray with the design of peter mother being like Wendy was to suggest that Wendy's house is actually Peter house from peter pan in Kensington gardens
with the character of Maimie Mannoring the young girl who gets lost and meets peter pan. who he falls in love with her and asks her to marry him in which she agree until she relises that her mother would be miss her dreadfully after peter being enraged with grown ups and telling her that all grown ups are all the sames. after promising peter that she will be back that evening (which she doesn't) leaves and never see peter again.
there is a scene in the live action film, where Wendy talks to peter about emotions that he has felt. she explains to peter that he has felt love before. linking it with peter pan in Kensington gardens is the love for his mother but with the proposal of Maimie Mannoring, and peter wanting to marry her. this could be link to the films and portray a link to peter pan films with peter pan in Kensington gardens.
evaluation of the module
this module has been very challenging with coming up with a narrative with the elvish film and getting great feedback about themes and needing to need a theme for the elves and taking a while to understand writing a narrative films. I've really enjoyed this module and its been a fantastic experience as a director and writing films. i really enjoyed fighting for the elvish film and then realizing its not going to work was great because its best to get this now at university that in the industry. it hard as a film maker to put effort to a film and then get shot down this happens a lot in the industry and the feedback i got was strong and hard hitting which was great to receive as now I have the experience of adapting a book. when finally having the green light for a film with peter pan in Kensington gardens i only had around 6 weeks to get the visual experiments, storyboards, animatic, script, casting and writing. which looking at what i've achieved in the time still manage to storyboard script it voicing recorded some needing to be rerecorded. but over happy with the work i have produced. if i was to do it again with the preproduction i would mainly sort the story board out and finish the writing on the side. i would of liked to explore more with style and experimenting more visually. I've really enjoyed the freedom of this module and felt i thought about what i wanted as a film maker and what i would like to make personally especially with the elves and spirits and all the other ideas and test creating and exploring with my imagination and creating the back bone of the narrative and developing it to the narrative i have now and learning the development of film making and the risks having to take. the advantage of animation to live action and being able to still create a narrative fantasy and use animation to portray the flying with peter pan. over all am am really happy with the work i have produced and really enjoyed the making of peter pan so far and watching the development of this module from the elves to peter pan and I've learn a lot with this module and will definitely put it towards my future film and continue to develop as a director.
